The Purpose of A Business

I am going to share a simple yet profound quote related to business and asset protection with you today as I rush out to the airport…

“The whole purpose of a business is to create and keep a customer” –Peter Drucker

That’s it…

Think of all the things that are NOT the purpose of a business.  Everything else besides creating and keeping customers.

So, CUSTOMERS are the major asset of your business.

What are you doing to find more of them?
What are you doing to keep the ones you have from defecting to the competition?
What are you doing to keep them from forgetting you even exist?

Now, I’m off to San Diego for a few days but I should have some very interesting things to share from my trip…

Seize the Day,

Rob

    Hi Rob,

Have fun with Frank and learning Mass Control!!

You know i always thought thats what business was too until I heard an interview that struck me like a bolt of lightning!!

He said “the purpose of a business is to make money!!” as in greenbacks in the back pocket!

Sure enough I thought hell thats what business is about to create an income for me and my family!

Sometimes we forget that. Focus on the customer is good advice.

You have no business or cash flow without the customer.

May I add the word “paying” so that the quote becomes:

“The whole purpose of a business is to create and keep a PAYING customer.”

Simple wisdom that is often clouded by too much intellectual material designed to “create” customers.

Yes, customers are key. Without them there is no business. Great questions to promote thinking which will lead to actions hopefully, that then bring in more customers.

What a novel concept – “The whole purpose of business is to create and keep a customer.” Geez – I thought the purpose of business was for the government to come in, take over, screw up the market forces and declare it a total failure. Silly me!

Who hasn’t had the experience with Big Company where the accounting department acted like they ran the company? Maybe it wasn’t accounting, it was another department, Research and Development, Advertising and Public Relations. The good CEOs never forget that sales make it possible for the company to exist and all other departments support that effort.

    Hi Rob,

So true but it seems nobody follows this advice. They either do one or the other but not both at the sametime.

That is a simple, not widely known, truth. Most people, even business owners, do not think of a business that way. I know I didn’t; not until I read that quote.

Hey, on another note, your homestead exemption advice (from a previous post) is going to save me a bundle! I talked with my accountant about it yesterday and he wondered why I hadn’t taken advantage of it yet. I wondered why he hadn’t mentioned it to me before. Anyway, thank you for the tip!
