Is Your Business Like The DMV?

I took my two fifteen year old daughters to the DMV to get their Driving Learner’s Permits this morning and it reinforced everything that is screwed up about government services…

1. We were there 30 minutes before the opened.  They opened 5 minutes late, and were in no hurry to get moving.
2. The employees ranged from indifferent to flat out hostile.
3. After we had been there an hour and were working through the various “hoops” they had arranged, the “Statewide Computer System is down” was announced.
4. They continued to process us since we were already in the maw but at the last station they said that they couldn’t complete our paperwork because of the system being down.
5. We were given the option of coming back later or waiting till they come back up (They had no idea how long that will be).
6. Since it is a thirty minute round trip, I asked if we could call ahead to see if the computer was back on-line?  NO, that would overload our phone system.

So, our only alternative is to pick a time, and go wait in line again to finish what we couldn’t get done this morning because of their screw up…

It was a good education in the incompetence of government services for my kids.

I sure as hell don’t want these people in charge of healthcare.  “All Kidneys over here, Heart Problems over there… the doctors are running late, you can wait or come back…”

DOES YOUR BUSINESS RESEMBLE THE DMV IN ANY WAY?  If so, better fix it and get rid of your Sales Prevention Department…

    Rob,
DMV is a very good argument against the gov. running anything!

I also see this don’t care attitude in many business throughout the day.

    Good lesson for your girls.

Daughters Driving = Major headache, no matter what.

Anyway, those of us who earn a living can only eat what we catch; government workers use our money to be accountable to no one. It never works, regardless of how well intentioned.

    Rob,

I like your term “Sales Prevention Department”!

The equivalent “DMV” here is better. So maybe you should have your daughters get their licenses here instead, then transferred it over :) )

Oh no, damn it, I forget that your govt department over there will say the driving licenses are NON-Transferable!

Sadly, and I mean really sad, this is the future we have to look forward to in the United States.

Only the government could be this incompetent and get away with it because there is no alternative. Lord help us all when they get their hands on our healthcare system! Instead of raising the standard for those who need healtcare, we’re going to force everyone into inferior care. Only in the mind of a bureaucrat would this make sense!

So sorry you had such a bad start to your day!

    Hi Rob,

I know the goverment seems to love hiring hampsters. I know when I lost my passport I went through pretty much the exact samething.

This sounds like pretty decent service compared to government services in France ;-) [Come and deal with them for a couple of days and you'll see what you guys in US are heading toward...]

In my opinion, any business owner who doesn’t get rid of (or retrain and monitor) any employees with this kind of attitude simply deserves the difficulites he’ll experience as a reult. Cause and effect!

Not suprising at all. What is it with state workers. They really do earn their bad raps. It is such a waste on so many levels: money, time, resources, the list goes on and on.

Seems like the only government service that is very good at what they do is the armed forces.

Sales prevention department. Excellent point, indeed! I’ve had pretty decent times at the DMV and also do NOT want the government taking over a nationalize healthcare plan.

It is completely outside of their government purview. THAT is why I don’t want them managing it. It is NOT their job to do so.

    Military, police, public roads. :)

I agree with Mark. The only problem with the story is that you have twin daughters??? I can’t imagine when that days comes for me that I have to actually let one of my children drive. :-)

Excellent points made…good to know we here are not the only ones. One could probably go to the DMV, sit there all day with a pad and pen, put together a $10,000 seminar on what NOT TO DO.

Not many private companies would be in business still if they acted like government agencies. Isn’t it so true, almost everywhere, how awful they are run.

Oh no! You’ve reminded me that I have to renew my drivers license – with a written test – at the DMV. As far as the health system going downhill if the government takes over, if you want to get just an inkling of what it will be like, try dealing with your HMO.
