I’m Going To Graceland….

Hi, Just landed in Memphis. Beautiful evening… Here’s one of my favorite songs to listen to with this post…

Audio clip: Adobe Flash Player (version 9 or above) is required to play this audio clip. Download the latest version here. You also need to have JavaScript enabled in your browser.

I have been to Memphis twice before in the past ten years.  It is even more of a Music City in my mind than Nashville.  There are so many great historical roots of the Blues here and they culminated in the birth of Rock and Roll in the form of Memphis’ most famous son– Elvis Presley.

Elvis was (maybe still is) a master at total domination of his market.  I think there are many things that come in to play here:

1. originality
2. authenticity
3. a little luck- right place, right time
4. massive over delivery to his audience
5. willing to embrace new popular media (like movies)
6. raw talent
7. a flair for self-promotion
8. a solid team to support him

There are more, and I’ll be looking for them tomorrow as I tour the grounds. Stay tuned.

And isn’t this song by Marc Cohn, “Walking in Memphis” great?

Saw the ghost of Elvis
On Union Avenue
Followed him up to the gates of Graceland
Then I watched him walk right through
Now security they did not see him
They just hovered ’round his tomb
But there’s a pretty little thing
Waiting for the King
Down in the Jungle Room

Seize the Microphone…

Enjoy Memphis. There is a lot to learn from Elvis’ marketing and branding. Amazing that it seem to be instinctual for him.

Yep we went to the Blue Lagoon (we went in 1985 five years after the movie). And we went Rafting on the Rio Grande! And Dunn’s River Falls! and the Appleton Rum Estate! I’ll have to find some pictures…

We closed the place one night at about 3 in the morning. Eating with my hands was a big surprise. Let me know if you’d like to shoot a short video testimontial for Corporate Veil while I’m in the area – I own the product and it’t been a big help.

    Rob,
Thanks for the tune, I’ve always loved that song.
Enjoy yourself in Memphis, a place I plan to visit in the near future.

You gotta love the success story of Elvis. He came from nothing to being the KING of Rock-n-Roll. If you see Big E, tell him we said hello.

I didn’t see the jungle room in the other pictures. I’ve heard so much about it. Are you allowed to take pictures of it? Great song!
