How to Excel? Keep your Promises…

Personal Development, Sales

Most people don’t do what they say they will do.  This puts them in a huge hole credibility-wise with their customers and associates.

They create every excuse imaginable, often fabricating an excuse takes more effort than just doing what we say we’ll do.

This is very simple behavior to correct…

Step One. Only make commitments you plan to keep.

Step Two. Write down all commitments in a place where you will not lose them, and where you can cross them off when done.

Step Three. Spend time each day clearing the list.

Having a system to ensure that promises don’t get broken will put you ahead of 95% of your competition.  And you’ll have to work less hard to build trust.

Have a great day…

Rob

Rob – this is spot on. Break even the smallest promise and credibility goes to zero faster than imaginable – and everyone will hear about it.

  3. I agree 100%. And things HAPPEN which were unanticipated or where a step took longer. COMMUNICATE ALONG THE WAY contributes well additionally to cement the longevity of the business relationship.

This is so true. I avoid assumptions as much as possible but usually assume won’t do what they say they’ll do. I agree with your recommendation to list and keep tracks of our commitments. I personally keep my list fairly short because I like to keep my word, but I sometimes struggle to apply this to promises to myself though.
    Very good points.

    All the best,

Great advice, Rob. It’s also a good reminder that what one might take for granted others may not bother to do (it’s very easy to assume everyone is doing the same thing).

    This is really important.

I renege on my promises sometimes. Every single time it has cost be in terms of reputation, and I always have to work harder as a result.

Cool reminder. I need a system!

    Rob,

Fulfilling our promises & commitment is indeed important to have high credibility.

And over delivery is even beyond that!

Credibility takes a long time to develop and an instant to be wiped out. Not keeping one’s promises is the surest fire way to destroy it.

keep your promises at all cost, but to do that efffectively you have to know your limitations. i’m a little behind on some promises right now and i’m paying the price.

I almost never break my promises because I’m Catholic. Not that I’m super religious or anything, but I have that built in Catholic guilt that is so overwhelming that I have to avoid it at all costs. LOL
