E-Mail Vigilance…

Michel Fortin, on his superb blog, said it all today with the title, “Purging my way to freedom from email clutter.” But his entire post is still well worth the read:

You should likewise purge YOUR email box of newsletters that don’t consistently deliver excellent content;

hold those who’ve been given permission to interrupt you to a HIGH standard;

and get yourself free, too.

Purge without remorse.

    This is excellent advice. My (now unused) hotmail account had over 50,000 unread emails in it. Most of them total rubbish.

    Just to be clear – the Jalopy Gang Newsletter consistently delivers excellent content. Unsubscribing to this one would be like giving up breathing – a bad idea.

    Thanks.

    Great advice. Also, scheduling periodic times to read e-mail, rather than as they come, helps greatly. I setup rules in Outlook to auto-file nearly all routine mail.

    Great advice. It’s easy to allow emails we never read to clutter up our inboxes. Purging them periodically should probably be done much like periodic house cleanings.

    Rod,

    Great article you mentioned!

    The 2 points Michel Fortin says below are both interesting!

    >
    We both take weekends off, and our productivity has increased tenfold, if not more, because of it.

    I highly recommend you do the same. Taking weekends off, or at least one day, will be one of the best productivity boosters you will give yourself and your business.

    Nevertheless, a major reason for the purge was the continuously decreasing quality in information, and the disproportionate increase in promotional or cloned messages.

    Hi Rob,

    excellent advise, indeed. I find I do it in about 2 or 3 waves. I unsubscribe at an initial level. Then like, a month, or 6 wks later, another few go.

    The about 3 months later, just like you said, Hold Them to a High Standard. I have about 2 left which I am seriously considering chucking. But since David Garfinkel likes them, I am holding onto them… for now.

    Email decluttering is an excellent reminder.

    We should also use this as a reminder to avoid sending crap in our own e-mails.
