“Planning to Get that Done By the End of 2010”

I’ll post this tonight since tomorrow I’ll be driving most of the day to Spring Break at the scene of the crime: Jekyll Island (the crime? The creation of the Federal Reserve Bank in 1910, see http://budurl.com/jekyll for one version of the story)

But that is a tangent… something interesting happened earlier tonight…

I was at dinner with my wife and the chef/owner of the restaurant came over to talk with us for a while since I had asked the waitress a few questions about the place.  The topic turned to his business level and I asked him whether he was using social media like Facebook and Twitter to spread the word about his business.   I gave him a few examples of other Atlanta dining places doing a good job of this…

His response was a bit of a shock… “I just started a Twitter account in the last couple of days and I plan to have a Facebook page up and start using Twitter to promote my business by the end of 2010”.

My jaw hit the table, and I said “2010? I doubt if Twitter will even be around in its present form by the end of 2010, and Facebook too.  You need to have that up and going this weekend at the latest.  It just isn’t that hard… You have a bunch of twenty-somethings working here, let one of them do it while they are standing around.”

To his credit, he agreed that it was probably not wise to wait for 2010 and he went back to his work at the pass, and a few minutes later I saw that he tweeted his “Special of the Night”—good for him… this is an excellent use of Marginal Time (which is a topic for a later day)…

The point of me telling you this true-life story?

Do you have plans to complete something way in the future that you should be doing right now?

Rob

PS: The dinner was great, and we went and saw the musical “Happy Days” at the Fabulous Fox Theater in Atlanta afterwards. It was a lot of fun seeing Richie, The Fonz, Potsie, Ralph, Joanie (and of course Chachi), Mr. C. and Marion, and Pinky Tuscadero again…

    Great Point Rob!

The key to any great success is ’speed of implementation’ and thinking in terms of working simultainiously on a number of projects rather than doing things one at a time

    Hey Rob!

Sounds like you really helped him out!

Working with life coaches, I’ve found that the main reasons people set goals like this is a lack of confidence which stems from a lack of KNOWLEDGE.

Maybe he felt that setting up facebook would take a long time? Maybe he wasn’t sure what kind of thing he should write?

Sounds like you gave him the reassurance that he needed to kick things off.

    Great post as ever, Rob.

Most people are amazed at how fast things can go when you just. The market moves much faster than almost anyone imagines and it takes real diligence to stay ahead.

I hope the twitter thing will be covered in this course. I set up an account but can’t really figure out how to use it. Matt Shields says he gets 20-30 new visitors a day to his site due to twitter. He had a video up on using it and not surprisingly, I forgot to check it out until it was too late and not posted anymore. thanks for the reminder to get that working.

I guess that would count for the tip! The key strategy is to act now because the situation is changing. Heck, the restaurant might not even be around in 2010 if they move at a glacial pace.

Even in my limited experience: offline does not quite get online. I guess that’s where we come in.

They even had a reference in the musical to Fonzie Jumping the Shark… off course this phrase “jumping the shark” has entered the pop lexicon…

They made a lot of jokes at the expense of the TV series which I watched the first three or four seasons of… it was pretty true to the TV series characters…

by the end of 2010? yawzha! indeed, reminds me of the singles who crave romantic companionship and who DESIRE to get married. “but I’ll start dating after I lose 25 pounds….” please read aka NEVER.

    speed of implementation is essential
even if it is simply that we START and massively need to correct
the power in our mind of opening a new neuropathway to START has a POWERFUL effect that many simply do NOT understand.
